Transport Upgrades

Transport upgrades

Progress continues with Network Rail’s redevelopment of Victoria Station and Transport for London’s improvements to Victoria Underground Station. These two schemes are under way, modernising the public areas of this busy transport hub, to provide increased station capacity, better passenger flow in and out of the station and greater accessibility. These changes while causing temporary inconvenience will significantly improve the network users experience and will help transport providers meet the needs of business in the near future.

Travel advice: why your business will need a workplace travel plan for London 2012

Hammersmith Flyover and its effect on your journey to SW1

A decision has been taken to keep the flyover closed for at least another week (until week beginning 16 January) for investigations to be completed. Transport for London (TfL) is working day and night to re-open the flyover to traffic as soon as it is safe to do so. The complex flyover was forced to close due to water damage that has corroded and weakened the cables that give the bridge its strength. It had been thought that it would be up to ten years before any major work was required on the flyover, however recent maintenance checks showed work would be required much earlier than anticipated.

Motorists are strongly advised to avoid the area and take alternative routes. A number of measures to manage traffic flow and communicate with motorists, businesses and residents have been put in place. Assurances have been given that the flyover will be fully available before the London 2012 Games.

Victoria Tube station upgrade

Work has begun upgrading parts of Victoria Tube station. The station will be going into the first cycle of the refurbishment, to avoid long delays in your journey use alternate means of surface transport, alterations are due to be completed by January 2012.

What’s happening?
  • They are refurbishing 3 escalators connecting the Victoria line ticket hall and platforms
  • These escalators were installed in 1969 - heavy use and growing demand; to ensure safety and continued reliability must refurbish now
  • One escalator will be taken out of service at a time - One ‘up’ and one ‘down; except from peak times from 16:00-20:00pm when both are ‘up’
How will it affect your journey?
For the station to remain open and operational from 16:00-20:00pm weekdays:
As Transport for London have decided to coincide the alterations with new ticket office opening times ticket offices are going to be closed for longer periods and there will be:
  • NO TICKETING FACILITIES IN THE STATION,
  • There will be platform access only via District and Circle Line ticket hall gateline (estimated time taken from entrance to platforms to take approx 15 minutes).

What can I do to avoid delays?
  • Purchase tickets or top-up Oyster Cards before entering Victoria Tube Station 16:00-20:00pm weekdays,
  • Or avoid entering the station 16:00-20:00pm weekdays and use an alternative route like St James's Park, Westminster, Green Park or Hyde Park Corner.
  • Sign up for Barclays Cycle Hire, there are plenty of docks near Victoria station. Find them on our map: Barclays Cycle Hire docks located in Victoria
Train and coach operators
Train and coach operators are to inform their respective staff and customers of impacts on their customer's journeys, and to encourage purchasing tickets before arriving at the Tube station,
and to avoid entering the station, if possible, 16:00-20:00pm on weekdays.
